Science: Pearling drives mitochondrial DNA nucleoid distribution
Our latest work is now published in Science! We uncovered pearling as a mechanism
governing mitochondrial nucleoid distribution and inheritance, and dissect its
conserved regulation.
Juan and Olimpia Bompadre (EPFL) were the winners of the “PIs of Tomorrow” competition at the
Life Sciences Switzerland Annual Meeting 2026 at the University of Zürich.
We contributed to the intensive training week for the talented team of students competing at the International Biology Olympiad,
teaching Cell Biology and Molecular Biology Methods.
Rotation at the legendary advanced research training course at
the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, exploring modern cell biology through microscopic,
biochemical, and computational approaches.
Mini-symposium hosting leading researchers at EPFL to share the latest breakthroughs in mitochondrial biology,
including T. Wai, V. Eisner, A. Brownstein,and D. Ziegler.
Mitochondrial Research Community Rebuilds on Bluesky
As the academic community migrates to decentralized platforms, we launched a
“starter pack” on Bluesky to amplify a fresh and diverse mitochondrial
research community.
The Laboratory of Experimental Biophysics hosted an interactive stand at Scientastic,
EPFL’s annual festival, demonstrating advanced microscopy to the general public.
Nominated by Technology Academy Finland, Juan attended the GYSS 2022 in Singapore by the National Research
Foundation Singapore, where he was awarded a return trip for his science communication video.
We contributed to the intensive training week for the talented team of students competing at the International Biology Olympiad,
teaching Cell Biology and Molecular Biology Methods.
Argentinian popular science podcast episode, Juan goes into a deep-dive of mitochondrial biology
and evolution, discussing how research findings change our understanding of biology and disease.
Science communication chapter exploring the properties and unique history of element 39
(Yttrium) for the general public, as part of the periodic table series published in print
Juan guest lectured in cell and molecular biology for the selective program
preparing Argentine students for the International and Ibero-American Biology Olympiads.
On September 20th, buildings around the world were lit in green to raise awareness
for mitochondrial disease. We support this global movement to educate the public
and medical community.
